Comets Quaker Day June 2007: What’s to say about a bunch of 87 inch W/S Quakers?

No ARF’s here !

Extra 330S – 40% scale: 118 inch W/S; DA 150 engine; canister mufflers; 3-bladed prop;

ARF Composite airframe; balsa covered foam wings;

Nice flyer, but a little on the heavy side.

Pitts Model 12

98 inch W/S; Older Bob Truworthy kit no longer available;

3W 150 engine; built-up fuselage with foam wings.

An OK flyer, needing some repairs.

Sunracer V2

39.4 inch (1 meter) W/S; Mega 16-15-2 motor; 5X5 APC DIY folding prop

Motor develops 962 watts and plane weighs 20 ounces; Calculates out to 770 watts per pound.

This is stupid fast - - about 170 mph. Small and a real challenge to keep track of in the sky.

Keeps your adrenaline flowing !

Sbach 342 – 40% scale:

122 inch W/S; DA 150 gas engine; ARF;

Light weight balsa and lite ply airframe – very light at 37.5 pounds – great flying aerobatic airplane.

Quickie 500’s:

52 inch WS ARF’s; 2-stroke .40 to .55 cid engine

We fun-race up to 4 in the air at once.

Super Quaker 200

3W 85 cc twin engine. W/S 168 inches weighs 45 pounds

Enlarged a set of standard Quaker plans double sized and filled with a lot of wood.

Fun and very easy to fly.

Have done about 330+ flights including 55-60 glider tows with it. Needs repaired.

It's a control-line kit produced by Brodak called "Legacy"

Wing span of 60". I'm going to power it with an O.S. .50 (2-stroke).

Note "control line" previously. Well it ain't no more. I built both wings the same. CL planes have a shorter right wing as that side of the plane goes faster as it spins around the circle.

I also modified the vertical tail; made it taller and added a rudder (remember control line planes don't got no rudder). Also changed the "stunt flap", think big flap, to a pair of ailerons. Horizontal tail and elevators remained the same. Had to work out the balance and mounts for the additional servos, battery pack and receiver.

The modifications came from thoughts of an author that published a piece in the August 2015 edition of Model Aviation.

We'll see if he and I got it right hopefully soon. Still some color trim and final assembly to go...

Quaker Logo Final

Lastly, I "drew" the Quaker logo (see attached) for Lynn B as he is restoring a Quaker and working with a vinyl guy to get Lynn a couple stickers for his project.

The Quaker logo is a vector drawing so It can be scaled up/down with no loss of resolution.

If you need a sticker or want the art, let me know...Oh and if you know a reasonable local vinyl-cutter let me know.

1. Mini Ultra Stick that I've had for some years. First 4 flights crashed, but I got it now

2. New Carbon Cub SS.  I just got very cool Eflite kit which just came out. Love the big planes

3. Hanger 9 Toledo Special I replaced when my gas one drilled into the creek at Cosita. Bought from a nice guy in Ojai. The other blue one is an Ugly Stick I got from Dynam I believe. Great flyer.

4. Aeroscout trainer flies by itself. Hobby Zone plane with safe mode super easy to fly pusher.

5. Night Radian glider. Nice build and great slope soaring plane.

This is one of my Models,  a Velox Revolution R1. The plane is an ARF from 3D Hobby Shop. Wing span is 52”

This is electric and runs a T3910 motor on 4S batteries and spinning a 15x7 prop.

It is a superb flying aerobatic aircraft!

In 1988 I won a ½ hour aerobatic ride in the Mustang called the Ridge Runner III at an airshow. Dan Martin is the owner and pilot, the original was flown by Ace Pierce McKennon in WWII.

McKennon had 11 aerial victories and destroyed 9 German planes in ground attacks for a total of 20 as shown on the nose art.

Since we have to stay at home, I bought the Horizon kit from Ken at California Hobbies and decided to dress it up to replicate the Ridge Runner II.  Once the Covid closure is over, I hope to get it up where it belongs, in the sky. The plane has a 47 inch wingspan and electric power. My son Donald made me a flight wind breaker with the razorback hog on it to wear when I fly it!

It’s a FreeWing ARF A-10 Warthog with 80mm EDF’s with my paint work instead of factory grays, some also is seen in the background.

The Silence Twister I won at the potluck dinner. W.S. 66.9 inches. The rotating retracts don't fully retract. The pushrods bend. I'll think of something.
